  • Telra Telegram - April 12

Welcome back, everyone! We trust you had a pleasant transition after Spring Break with the short week. As we look forward to a full week ahead, take this weekend to bask in the sunshine, recharge, and gear up for the final trimester together! In this issue -Paint the Blacktop Project, 4/24, we need your help! -Reminder, Reset your dismissal plans -Culture Day, 4/25, 5-7pm -Telra Tech Help -Art Walk & Craft Fair, 5/2, 5-7pm -Upcoming Events Paint the Blacktop Project - We need your help! Get excited! As part of the ongoing improvements here at Telra, we've partnered up with Shannon Wilfong, who is the Community Outreach Educator at Atrium Health Levine Children's in the Pediatric Trauma Unit and together, we are painting a playground on Telra's bus lot on the next Teacher Workday, Wednesday April 24th - in order for this to be successful we need YOU! (Complimentary childcare from the Superlative club will be offered to all volunteers!) Recess can become an overwhelming and chaotic operation. Having well marked activities provides increased motivation for children to enter into an activity and become engaged in purposeful play.  The well marked activities will maximize the number of students involved in physical activity, rather than having students wait in lines or sit out. These activities will be developmentally appropriate according to age and motor skill abilities and will result in more active children, fewer injuries, and fewer playground conflicts. If you can spare some time to assist with painting our bus lot area, on Wednesday 4/24 - please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F49ABA82EABFEC25-49069070-paintaplayground#/ This activity will also be open to our middle school students (6th-8th Grade only) to volunteer! If you have any questions, please email kate.waters@telra.org Reminder - Reset your dismissal plans! Time for some Spring cleaning! Please reset your dismissal plans using the Alma Start Dismissal Plan Update form. Everyone needs to log in and check their dismissal selections! We've found that a number of families have incorrect dismissal options (previous extra-curriculars, special events etc.) A regular "clean up" like this is the only way to get rid of obsolete data! NEW - there is now only one dismissal form in Alma. You'll use the same one to set your regular plan or to make one-day deviations. More directions here. Also, remember to use Alma Forms to submit any absence reports before 9am on the day of the absence. Culture Day, April 25th, 5-7pm Culture Day is an opportunity for our school community to come together and celebrate the different cultures that make up our community. Spring photos are tomorrow, Thursday, March 21. Please ensure your student is wearing their complete Telra uniform and has a big smile ready! You can order photos here. In this issue Morning Tardies and afternoon pick-ups Telra's Inaugural History Fair - tomorrow, 5-7pm! Spring Break Camp here at Telra Outdoor updates Volunteer Opportunities - can you help serve lunch tomorrow? Sign up below! Upcoming Events - this week and beyond! Morning Tardies & Afternoon pick-ups Recently, we've noticed a significant rise in emails regarding students' attendance, particularly instances where they are marked tardy. Telra's academic day starts at 8:15am sharp, and students need to be in their classroom at 8:15am to avoid being marked tardy. Car-rider families - we know the morning routine at home can be tough, but be sure to arrive well-in time to make sure your child starts the Telra day on the right foot. We want to teach students that punctuality matters. The morning car line opens at 7:55am. Aim for the Green zone! Cars arriving 7:55 - 8:05 am - Green zone - Your child will have plenty of time to visit their locker/cubby and get to class. Maybe even chat with their friends and relax a bit before school begins. Cars arriving 8:05 - 8:10 am - Yellow zone - Your child will likely be on time, but you haven't left much cushion in case there is traffic on the road or in our drop off area. Cars arriving 8:10 - 8:15 am - Red zone - There is a good chance your child will be tardy. Best case scenario, they'll be rushing to get to class. Cars arriving after 8:15 am - Tardy - You will need to park and sign your child in. In the afternoon, early dismissal finishes at 3pm. Cars are invited to line up from 3:05pm onwards for afternoon carline. Please ensure you are not filling up the third lane prior to 3:00pm, so as to allow access to the school for families that need to collect their students early. Still have questions? Read more about arrivals and departures. Telra's Inaugural History Fair, Tomorrow - Thursday March 21, 5-7pm Our 4th - 8th Grade students have had the privilege to engage in the History Fair, where they've crafted projects centered on the theme "Turning Points in History". We invite you to join us in the gym, tomorrow, March 21 from 5-7pm, to view these projects! Thank you to Dr. Tenhulzen, Mrs. Gimeli and Mrs. McClain for orchestrating this enriching opportunity for our students and for supporting them throughout the process. We can't wait to see all the projects and discovering who our deserving winners are! We hope to see you there! Spring Break Camp at Telra The Superlative Club is offering Spring break camp at Telra, with part-time and full-time options from 8am-6pm daily. Exciting activities like hands-on electives in visual arts, science/nature, music/dance, culinary arts, and theatre games. Weekly camp rate: $200/student from 8am-4pm, with extended day options until 6pm for an additional $50/week Daily drop-in rate: $50/student Limited spaces available, find out more and register now! Registration - TELRA Institute Supplemental Care (thesuperlativeclub.com) Nature Trails, light poles and additional parking, oh my! Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. O'Neill, Telra was the grateful recipient of a North Carolina "Go Outside" Grant. GO Grants provide North Carolina students access to the outdoors and opportunities for direct experience and to learn by doing. In the wooded area, behind the playground, we now have a series of trails for students to enjoy! Thank you to Mrs. O'Neill and all involved for this wonderful addition to our school. In addition to the nature trails, there have been a number of other updates around campus recently! 1. Street lighting - Light poles have been installed around our campus to illuminate the roadways, parking lot, and driveways. This will make our campus safer in the evenings and early mornings for cars and pedestrians. 2. Fencing - Privacy fencing has been installed in front of our bus lot to provide a barrier between our blacktop playground and the McKee Rd. In addition, fences have been installed behind the school playground to help define and enclose the natural areas around the school. 3. Additional parking - The gravel "pavilion" lot between Telra and St. Francis UMC has now been paved and connected to our sidewalk. This will create additional parking for our whole campus. 4. Blacktop Painting Project - We're in the process of transforming the blacktop area into a more welcoming recess space for our students by adding Four Square courts, Hopscotch, and a running track. We're optimistic that this will be completed over Spring Break. Stay tuned for more details as we'll need volunteers to make it happen! Click "Complete" and on the next screen, click "Submit" You’ll know you are finished when you are returned to the “Active Process” screen and you see that the Intent to return 24-25 process is in the “Staff Review” stage with “nothing to do” Repeat this for each child at Telra. Wait: That's all you can do for now. Telra staff need to review and confirm your responses. Alma Start will show that the intent to return process is under "staff review" If you are not continuing at Telra, that's all you need to do. If you are rejoining us next year, we'll push you into the Re-registration process. Start the Re-registration process: (for those continuing at Telra) Towards the end of March, when you log into Alma Start, you'll see another Active Process Re-Registration 24-25 The first stage of this process is completing Information updates. This is where you can inform us if you want to update your email, phone number, address, or emergency contacts. We also ask you update your child's health information and transportation plans. Complete these forms and click submit. The next stage of this process is Certifications. Click through to read, understand, and type your name as your signature for each of them. Once again, click submit when you've completed all this. You're done. The next steps are for Telra staff to transfer all your information into the new school year. Nothing more for you to do! Thank you for being part of the Telra community, it’s been a great year so far and there is still more to come!  Please contact frontdesk@telra.org if you run into problems with the form and we'll help you out as best we can. A farewell message from our K-3 Principal, Principal Soto-Bazemore Dear Telra families, Today was a bittersweet day and I have never felt so loved and appreciated as Principal. I want to thank you for entrusting Telra with your children under my leadership for the past 3 years. It has been my privilege to serve and partner with you to see our students grow into the very best versions of themselves each and every single year. Thank you for your undying support, your kind words, and the fun memories we've shared through our experience with your incredible children. The School-Family partnership isn’t always easy, and I appreciate all of the honest conversations we have had to make sure we are all putting our best foot forward for our students. I have forged meaningful connections with students and families, and they will have a lasting impact on my life. As I move on from Telra, I hope to see your familiar faces around Charlotte and if you do spot me out and about, don’t be a stranger! I will always cheer and root for the well-rounded success of our Telra students and I look forward to seeing all the amazing things they will accomplish in the future.
